Always on the Move - Relocation Services

The moving and storage industry has changed remarkably in the last decade due to both external influences and innovations in the way we do business. Here are the top ways things are different now.

Taxes:

Did you know that changes in the tax code have made it so that the cost of moving is now a taxable part of an employee’s compensation? Accordingly, most companies seem to be deciding to compensate their employees more to make up for this, making the overall cost of relocating that much more expensive. This will have wide-ranging effects in the industry as a whole, as it will cause companies to develop more conservative relocation policies.

Technology:

Many companies are adopting new technologies to help streamline their workflow. A representative can now survey a customer’s home and its contents without ever leaving their desk, allowing them to create a moving plan, map out obstacles, and estimate weight, all through a smartphone camera. This innovation is also convenient for the consumer, as they don’t have to wait for someone to show up to their home to schedule a move. Some companies now are even using artificial intelligence to automatically analyze images or video.

Do-It-Yourself:

Customers can now take moving into their own hands with a huge diversity of options outside the “full-service” moving company business model. They can rent a truck and equipment, hire labor--and all at the push of a button. But with these new choices comes new danger and a host of bad actors trying to capitalize on the ignorance of the average customer. For that reason, The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) created a working group earlier this year to put together a report with 19 recommendations for protecting and educating consumers. These recommendations focus on getting accurate information into the hands of the consumer, sooner rather than later. Only this way can consumers minimize risk to themselves and be kept away from un-licensed rogue operators.
