Moving Industry - Always on the move....

The moving and storage industry has changed remarkably in the last decade due to both external influences and innovations in the way we do business. Here are the top ways things are different now. 


Did you know that changes in the tax code have made it so that the cost of moving is now a taxable part of an employee’s compensation? Accordingly, most companies seem to be deciding to compensate their employees more to make up for this, making the overall cost of relocating that much more expensive. This will have wide-ranging effects in the industry as a whole, as it will cause companies to develop more conservative relocation policies.


Many companies are adopting new technologies to help streamline their workflow. A representative can now survey a customer’s home and its contents without ever leaving their desk, allowing them to create a moving plan, map out obstacles, and estimate weight, all through a smartphone camera. This innovation is also convenient for the consumer, as they don’t have to wait for someone to show up to their home to schedule a move. Some companies now are even using artificial intelligence to automatically analyze images or video.

My name is Travis – Regional HR Manager at an Industrial Manufacturing Group. Our company and CRI have enjoyed a long partnership since 2007. We reviewed other relocation vendors, but we were just going to be a number with them. CRI makes everyone from entry-level to Senior Management feel appreciated through a very stressful time in most people’s lives when relocating.

CRI and the relocation program is an important part of the Company's on-boarding process as it is one of the few pieces that touches the entire family vs. just the employee. Within the first few days of offer acceptance and/or employment, employees and their families are forming their opinions of the new location/job.

The personalized experience that CRI provides right from the outset helps make them feel more comfortable. With many relocation companies employees can feel like a round peg being put in a square hole but CRI ensures that the employee feels engaged and is an active participant in the process.

CRI has great standard processes and procedures set up to administer our relocation program. 90% of relocations go per the standard process but there is typically a 10% deviation due to employee needs/requests that CRI is excellent in helping our company to assess and determine a course of action. Most times, CRI is proactively notifying us of these types of deviations from relocating employees that may turn into employee relation issues as well as giving us information on the costs, benefits, and unintended consequences to allow our company to make an informed decision. Relocation is stressful enough and we appreciate CRI consulting on potential issues and helping to implement creative solutions that still meet the needs of both the company and the relocating employee.

Relocation is one of those thankless activities where employees and their families are stressed for several reasons. CRI has both the right processes and people with a practical outlook on relocation that makes it as good of an experience as relocation can actually be. I would highly recommend CRI and their services!

Our top tips for Corporate relocation During the Summer

Summer often seems like the best time to move because the kids are out of school, the weather is good, and there is plenty of real estate on the market, but summer is what’s referred to in moving as the “peak season.” That means that it’s going to be more expensive, less flexible and that any given moving company will most likely be booked unless you reserve a date far in advance--a luxury that corporate professionals don’t always have.

So what to do if you have to move during the summer months? Here are some tips to ease the pain.

Tip #1 -- The Earlier the Better.

What some people don’t know is that the last week of a month is often the busiest for a mobility company. Try booking your move in the first or second week, and the earlier in the season, the better. This will give you and your movers alike some space in which to prepare thoroughly and not overwork.

The Tax Reform Bill and what it means to you

On Friday, December 22nd, 2017 President Donald Trump signed the tax reform bill passed by both the House and Senate. The bill contains significant changes including a repeal of the deduction and exclusion for moving expenses, effective January 1, 2018. This includes household goods shipping and the majority of final move expenses. Those expenses previously excludable will now be a taxable expense if paid for by an employer on the behalf of their employee or reimbursed to the employee.
